Capturing Authentic Love- Tips for Planning a Stylish Pillow Fight Engagement Session

Planning a pillow fight engagement session can be an enjoyable and genuine way to capture the essence of your love story. The session can consist of fun and passionate moments that embrace your playful side for these cherished memories. There are some details to consider when planning your photo session and getting great photos; here are some tips and styling suggestions that will make your experience truly special and elevate the overall look and feel of your engagement photos.

1. Location Matters- Choose a bedroom with a personality

A styled pillow fight engagement session requires and deserves the exact location scouting efforts as other engagement photoshoot sessions. Finding a studio with furniture to accommodate this type of session in your area can be tricky. I’ve provided a few studios in the Austin area and surrounding with bed setups in-studio that are too cute to pass up. The studio used during this styled engagement session was The Spot Studio in Pflugerville, at a styled photoshoot hosted and designed by a fellow creative, Stonehouse Photography. (Photos by me) Alternatively, you can find a stylish Airbnb in your area and plan a fun overnight staycation after your session. Here are some places with the cutest bedroom setups:

2. Time of day matters: Embracing golden hour

Opt for a golden hour session (30 minutes before sunset) to get soft, dreamy lighting that adds a touch of sultry magic to your photos. To add a moody touch to images, spray this atmosphere spray in the light beams to create a cloudy contrast.

3. Picking your outfits- How to match without matching

No, please don’t get me wrong, wearing matching outfits is a total vibe; I’m here for it! But if you want to compliment your fiance’s outfit without looking like identical twins, consider wearing complementary colors (white & black, blue and yellow, green and gray), similar prints, or different pieces from the same brand. Here are some of my favorite sets for guys and gals.

4. The perfect pillow

Not all pillows are made the same! You need to use down feather pillows to achieve that dreamy, falling-feather look in your photos. Cut a hole into the pillow for the feathers to fly out during the pillow fight.

5. Let’s talk about glam

I get it, you want to do your own makeup and hair before your session, but a professional makeup artist can upgrade your photos by enhancing your favorite features. They take the stress of getting ready out of your hands so you can spend the time getting excited for your session. Please note I’m good but not a miracle worker, and a fresh manicure will go a long way in up-close photos of your ring. Press-on nails are also an excellent affordable, and temporary alternative.

6. Embrace the laughs and focus on your fiancé

This photoshoot concept lets you capture genuine and playful photos with your fiancé. Let your playful side out, let loose, and have some fun! You’re recently engaged and are about to embark on the best love story of your life. Let yourselves be spontaneous and enjoy the moment. Your photographer will capture the authentic emotions as they unfold.

7. Think about post pillow fight clean-up

The benefit of down feather pillows is they create beautiful cascading flurries that elevate the ambiance of your photos. The downside is that these pillows are incredibly messy, and you have to consider the clean-up. Keeping a vacuum on hand will help clean the remnants from the session. It’s essential to remember that some studios and venues will fine if feathers are left behind, so be diligent in your clean-up efforts.

8. Choosing your photographer

Choose a photographer who can align with your vision and bring it to reality in photos. This will open the opportunity to capture authentic interactions because they understand how to bring out the best of you and your partner. Your photographer should radiate comfort and help you feel relaxed in front of a camera while also creating a stress-free process. Let your search end here if that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

I look forward to being more than a photographer for my clients and strive to create genuine, gorgeous photos while providing an incredible experience during one of the most significant milestones of your life. I want you to focus on the moment while I handle the logistics.
